Back in High School

Quran High School Host Club
Not a huge fan of the art for volume 1, but from what I’ve read online, it gets better much later. Haven’t seen the anime, but as I saw that it is more popular than the manga, I figured I’d expose myself to the latter. The humor that arises from the rich vs. the poor dynamic is pretty refreshing compared to a lot of the serious and dark pieces I’ve read.
It’s funny because if you were to describe this manga, a girl who makes a mistake and through paying it off ‘has’ to be surrounded by a group of gorgeous rich boys, it would sound exactly like something teenage boys would avoid. But honestly, it’s not that shallow. The boys each have their own stories and characteristics and I was surprised by how much character depth there was in something that sounds so trivial. The personal backstories and the interactions between the characters themselves are real and engaging. The character development in this manga is what pulls it away from being so ‘flamboyantly shojo.’ (read that in a review, thought it was funny).
It’s interesting that a lot of the shojo manga I read about when I was picking what to read has reviews that speak of the depth and the character development and the humor, but anyone who is not a teenage girl avoids them. I suppose that can be compared in equivalence to American teenage drama movies that come out (yes, I still watch them). There may be depth and story, character development and humor, but if it’s about an idolized ‘boy-type,’ and a girl then it’s no longer interesting to all of the other demographics.

I actually remember seeing this in middle school. I remember not really liking it then, but everyone else was laughing at it, so...
